Edinburgh pupils learn the art of effective communication

Effective communication was the theme of the day for 120 13-year-old pupils at Royal High School in Edinburgh as they participated in a discussion with Servelec Controls’ Business Development Manager, Yannick Longbottom.

Yannick, who went to school in Edinburgh, returned to discuss the importance of effective communication and how to communicate effectively as part of the school’s initiative to prepare the young learners for life after school.

Following his time spent with the pupils, Yannick explained: “The communication skills taught in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, English and Maths) are absolutely vital for successfully preparing school-leavers to take their next steps in their career, whether that is into further education, an apprenticeship or their first career role.”

Servelec Controls is a company that takes great pride in its links with the communities within which it operates, including supporting local academia. Aside from delivering talks in local schools, Servelec Controls plays an active role in shaping the STEM syllabus at Warrington University Technical College,  offering work experience placements for 14-16 year old budding engineers and year-long university placements for undergraduates.

Yannick continued: “It was an enriching experience to return to school with my old English teacher and talk to the current pupils about my experiences since leaving. Like the majority of careers, business development relies on the ability to communicate effectively; verbally and non-verbally. Hopefully the pupils have learned something about the importance of effective communication and they feel inspired to follow a STEM-related career.”

Dougie Arbuckle, Curriculum Leader at Royal High School said: “It was extremely valuable for our students to gain an insight into - amongst other things - the importance and variety of communication and language in a professional context. The aim of the day was to help students make the link between the academic and practical skills they learn in English and how they might be applied in professional life.”
