Servelec Controls to install safety system for new North Sea Apache well

Servelec Controls, an independent integrator of mission-critical control and safety systems, has been awarded a contract with oil and gas exploration and production company Apache Corporation to modify the fire and gas safety systems on the Beryl Alpha platform to enable the safe expansion of its current processing capability.

Apache’s new North Sea discovery, named Callater, will begin producing during the second half of 2017 and is of great strategic importance to both Apache, and the UK Continental Shelf. Servelec Controls has developed a practical and flexible engineering solution to modify the existing system and meet the ambitious timescales set for the installation.

Increasing the current processing capability of the Beryl Alpha platform requires the expansion of the complex legacy fire and gas safety system, including detection, control and extinguishing systems. The Servelec Controls modifications will enable the continuous monitoring of all equipment for the Callater subsea tieback from well head to platform and ensure the early detection and notification of any abnormal situations such as fire or combustible gas release.

Following the signing of the contract Andrew Mills, Managing Director of Servelec Controls (Oil and Gas) said: “We are delighted to continue building on our strong relationship with Apache which has seen us deliver many successful projects in addition to ongoing support services on their North Sea assets over the last ten years.

“While market conditions for upstream oil and gas companies remain challenging it is vitally important that new discoveries are seen through to production for the continued, economic recovery of the UK Continental Shelf. Servelec Controls works closely with Apache and other major operators to provide industry-leading control and safety systems which reduce Opex, improve safety and increase efficiency.”

Matt Kittle, Principal Engineer at Servelec Controls added: “Having personally worked with Apache on their Forties field projects for the last ten years, it is exciting to be part of the development of their Callater asset.

“Expanding the current fire and gas system in line with Apache’s ambitious timescales will help Apache meet their safety and critical infrastructure protection requirements while ensuring operational and business readiness for when the Callater well comes online.”

Servelec Controls also has a formal service contract with Apache for providing support and maintenance on offshore assets in the Forties field.”
